This was a good read. It was just the right amount of drama and love. At times I didn't like Deena character she was to timid it just got on your nerves. I did like Tak love for life and how he taught Deena that it's ok to live for yourself every once in a while. I didn't like how she only had one good aunt role model though. Sometimes I think black authors don't portray the black families that have both parents, not poverty-stricken and have no drama. Contrary to what we believe there are some out there. But other than that I liked the book and I would recommend it!!!

Normally when I do a review on a Romance novel I speak mainly of the two main characters, who in this book are Deena (biracial female) and Takumi (Japanese American), but Crimson Footprints is more than their love story. It’s about how Deena deals with the hand she is dealt, being raised by her Black grandmother in Miami’s inner city. For Takumi, it’s about growing up with traditional Japanese parents in a modern day American environment. The story mainly focuses on their story, but it also spends a great deal of time with Deena’s little sister, Lizzie. who is overlooked and in need of support. Let’s start with Deena and Takumi, it’s tragic on how these two meet but it seems to be destined. Deena is one the most talented architect in the county, working double time in school and focusing to get out of the ugly cycle of poverty. Out of all of her family on her father’s side, she is the most educationally accomplished. But, she is constantly greeted with thoughts from her family that she is not true to her culture, that she ‘acts white’ and that pertains to her education and work success or maybe there own insecurities.
“What’s a shell? It’s just a-a hard, protective outer layer. The same is true with family. They’re an outer layer, a protection from the world. As least that’s what they’re supposed to be.” -Takumi
My impression of this book is that is it not a light read; I would suggest to be ready to ask yourself questions on what you would do if this was you. Coming from someone who is used to reading fast New Adult reads, this book makes you slow down and think.
Please note that she has discussion questions for book clubs on her site, which focus on your impression of the book and that lead to good discussions regarding the highs and lows of interracial marriage. In Crimson Footprints there are good arguments on both sides and the author leaves it up to you to make that discussion for yourself.
I wasn't entirely sure what to expect when I received this novel for review. I thought it would be interesting as I don't read much interracial romance and never one with African American and Japanese American. While I enjoyed the storyline, I did find it a tad slow paced.
Deena Hammond is a young, ambitious woman despite not having the best family life. Being a " half breed" she gets flack from both sides of the family, never being accepted by either side. When her mother kills her dad, she and her siblings are left to be raised by their paternal grandparents. With Deena being the oldest she gets the brunt of the backlash. No matter what happens in her professional life as an architect it's never good enough for her grandmother. Being much to respectful she won't stand up to her grandmother.
When a chance meeting with Takumi Tanaka happens Deena is his knight in shining armor. Saving him from a crime, she is not someone he would likely forget in the near future. When tragedy strikes and Tak learns about it thru through the newspaper he takes advantage the opportunity to see her again. A budding romance takes place with lots of hiccups in the road. With backdrop stories to keep up it with makes for some good reading. At times its there is too much info and the story becomes a bit wordy which makes it drag. This author is a good storyteller and her strengths outweigh her weaknesses. I look forward to catching up with this couple in the next installment.

I absolutely LOVED this story! Very well-written. The path to Deena and Tak's relationship was so captivating. A nice slow build that worked in this storyline. She was so naive and weak when it came to standing up to her family. Her really helped her grow. Won't give away the storyline but suffice it to say ... she worked for his father. It was really interesting to see that she was the brainiac in the relationship ... really smart & he had no problem with that. He was an artist. They complimented each other.
I will say that when I bought this book I didn't realize there was a sequel ... actually two. I ended up buying the complete edition of all 3 since I liked this story so much. Book 1 (this one) was the best, book 2 was next & I had some real issues with book 3 which I won't cover here. This is truly a standalone book. Ended just fine which is why I was so surprised when I accidentally discovered the sequels. If you like romance, this is for you!!!
