Studying Paul Letters Contemporary Perspectives and Methods Joseph A Marchal 9780800698188 Books Reviews

Hard to follow along with the author point of view.
It's important to understand what this book is, and what this book is not. Dr. Marchal's edited compendium "Studying Paul's Letters" with the inclusion of 11 major historiographical schools of contemporary Pauline scholarship, starting with historical scholarship and moving through fields like feminist studies, postcolonial studies, and LGBT studies, is not a traditional work of Pauline scholarship (focusing on theology or traditional religious ideas). Instead, it is the broadest of introductions to alternative scholarly perspectives on Paul that hopes to expose the reader to this new trends and pose questions going forward for basic religious studies students, perhaps even some Seminarians who are entering without a broad background in heterodox perspectives in New Testament studies. In each essay, from a different author than Marchal who is just the general editor, a "different" approach to reading Paul is presented with a brief conclusion as to why it's relevant.

These "different" perspectives shouldn't be seen as different, but relational. In relation to the author, their background, and their field of study, they inevitably come to look at Paul from their perspective rather than the more "mainstream" perspective. This book is a compilation of heterodox scholarship on the recent trends of Pauline historiography. For instance, the article in Feminist Approaches by Cynthia Kittredge (Ch. 6) addresses Paul in the obvious light of Feminist studies. However, the article attempts to also recreate an understanding of the gendered and patriarchal world of the ancient Mediterranean before addressing Paul. Paul has been a target of feminist criticism that he endorses the subjugation of women but is this fair? Partially yes, and partially no. When looking at the article by Kittredge, one sees a slightly sympathetic view of Paul who was taking a stand against the gross inequality practiced practiced in the Greco-Roman World, but Paul himself obviously had his own shortcomings (after all, he lived 2,000 years ago!). One sees Paul not as an oppressor, but he isn't exactly a liberator either. He's certainly better than what the Roman world offered (that explains why women fueled the growth of early Christianity) but by 21st century standards, he's hardly laudable. Every essay follows this simple pattern of looking at Paul from alternative perspectives and bringing to light the relevance in Paul's letters to the contemporary reader based on their relationship to the text (the relationship of women to Paul, the relationship of African-Americans to Paul, etc.)

In this sense, this book is one of "relational hermeneutics." If you're looking for a book of "true" Pauline scholarship (like E.P. Sanders' Paul and Palestinian Judaism A Comparison of Patterns of Religion or N.T. Wright's most recent work, Paul and the Faithfulness of God, this is not a book for you). This is an introductory level book that presents quick and concise overviews of some of the recent alternative trends in Pauline scholarship. The work is also, generally speaking, non-Theological, and has less to do with mainstream scholarship concerning "theological studies" with relation to Paul's letters. Insofar that this is true, the book falls short. After all, a troubling trend in religious scholarship is how implicitly (or even explicitly) political religious scholarship has become. With the current trend of religious scholarship, a whole new subdivision of religious studies should really be introduced, Politicized Religion or something similar (is it ironic that there is a chapter devoted on "Politicizing Paul" in this compendium?).

Being an introductory book, I had purchased this book for a university course I took years ago on the New Testament. Hence, I am not an "" verified purchase. The book itself is a mixed bag. Be aware that this isn't traditional theological or religious scholarship. It is contemporary scholarship that bridges relational hermeneutics and includes post-modern narratives. But for what it's worth, the book itself and the selections are moderately worthwhile, some better than others, etc. The book itself doesn't pretend to be outright heavy duty Pauline scholarship like the works from Sanders and Wright mentioned above, yet, in trying to present an overview of heterodox perspectives on Paul in the growing field of relational hermeneutics--this book accomplishes what it set out to achieve. Thus, it is a nice introduction to have, or to have read, before you go diving into proper heterodox scholarship on Paul. For instance, having read the chapter on feminist approaches to Pauline scholarship will help before you read a book like Dale B. Martin's compendium of his own essays in Sex and the Single Savior Gender and Sexuality in Biblical Interpretation.
